The Story Of Crosspaw Life

From Tech to Tails

Two Dogs, One Vision, and a Whole Lot of Shedding
Welcome to Crosspaw Life. I’m Derk, and if you’ve ever looked into the piercing, intelligent eyes of an Alaskan Klee Kai (AKK) and wondered, "Is this dog outsmarting me?"—you’re in the right place.

My journey into the world of "Miniature Huskies" didn't start in a kennel; it started in the fast-paced world of technology program management. While I spent my days managing complex systems and engineering directors at companies like Microsoft and Amazon, my home life in Carnation, WA, was being delightfully "managed" by two small, vocal, and incredibly smart dogs: Yeti and Harley.

Why I Started Crosspaw Life
When I first brought Yeti and Harley home, I realized that while there was plenty of info on Huskies, the Alaskan Klee Kai was a different breed entirely. They aren't just smaller versions of their cousins; they are sensitive, "transactional" thinkers who require a unique approach to training, grooming, and companionship.
I found myself constantly researching, testing gear, and trial-and-erroring my way through their puppy years. I realized other AKK owners were likely looking for the same thing I was: honest, experience-based advice that comes from a person, not a manual.

What You’ll Find Here
At Crosspaw Life, my goal is to simplify the lives of AKK owners. This isn't just a blog; it's a community for people who:

-
Navigate the "AKK Attitude": Learning how to motivate a dog that thinks for itself.
-
Master the Double Coat: Keeping your home (mostly) fur-free despite the "coat blows."
-
Find the Right Gear: Discovering products that actually fit and function for a high-energy, small-frame breed.
-
Enjoy the Adventure: From the trails of the Pacific Northwest to the comfort of the living room.

Beyond the Pack
When I’m not writing about Klee Kais or troubleshooting the latest training challenge, you’ll likely find me Euro nymphing on a local river, managing home improvement projects, or exploring the natural beauty of Oregon and Washington with my girlfriend.

Crosspaw Life is my way of merging my love for documentation and strategy with my passion for these incredible dogs. I’m glad you’re here for the ride.
